NEWS

Kent Hockey Association

Coaching and Youth Development

(Boys)

As I settle in to my new role I thought it prudent to introduce our committee and to give you an idea of what we do. While we are a committee we would welcome more members and volunteers. (To volunteer you would need to hold a current coaching qualification as well as be well as undergo a police check).

As a committee we look after the interests of the Boys Hockey section for KHA.

We are responsible for:

1.                appointing managers and coaches for the County sides at U19, U16, U15, U14 and U13.

2.                administering the County League (primarily for Club sides) for U18, U16 and U14

3.                organising the Cup Competitions (primarily for Schools) at U18, U16 and U14. This is a knockout competition.

4.                organising the National Minis at U13, U11 and U9 where the winners represent the County in Divisional Rounds

5.                organising foreign tours to represent the County at various age groups, which have been successful in the past.

6.                providing opportunities for age groups to be coached and enter County Indoor tournaments.

7.                representing our County at the South committee and forwarding their communications to our clubs and members.

One of our areas where development is needed is the support and development of coaches within the County and it is felt we should develop this area further. With the possibility of organising talks on coaching, sport injuries and recovery, sport physiology etc.

Other areas we see as key to our aims is to improve communications between RDC’s and satellites to our committee and to increase the links between local sport development officers and our committee

As a starting point I have included a list of the committee members as well as the teams responsible for County sides. As you can see there are vacancies at present and it would be nice to fill these in the near future.

I would like to invite all clubs to enter their respective teams for the upcoming league season as I would like to do the draw as soon as possible to allow clubs to organise their season well in advance.

For this season we will be using the 1st of January as the qualification date and the following will apply:

Age group           Year of Birth

U19s -                  1991 and before

U16s -                  1992

U15s -                  1993

U14s -                  1994

U13s -                  1995

I have taken over at a point in time where we are celebrating on the back of a very strong season. I hope this will continue for the foreseeable future and look forward to hearing your views and opinions.

Yours truly,

Brad Visser

End of year report:

Coaching and Youth Development – Boys

If success is measured by winning then it has been yet another hectic but rewarding season with a number of notable successes which are mentioned later on.  If success is also measured by participation and a wide base then on that front we have also been successful. As many of you know I am retiring from the post as Chairman of the boy’s section and wish my successor all the best.  It is not farewell as I am still involved n County Coaching etc but to give me a time to recharge batteries etc. But before I carry on with the report I wish to thank the many unsung heroes, the unpaid professionals, the adults who give up their time freely to look after the coaching and development of the youth of today but the senior players of tomorrow and have supported me over my tenure.

Kent has again run County sides at U19, 16, 15, 14 and 13 levels.  They have played in 7 county championship matches with the 3 senior sides playing before last Christmas and the juniors playing after.  They have all had training sessions throughout the playing part of the season but have also held a number of open sessions for assessment of those nominated at a particular age group.  My thanks to others who have put out sides to play against these squads in what at times has been rather inclement weather.  It has been pleasing to see that players come from a wide base of schools and clubs showing the depth of talent that we have within the County. Coaches at schools and clubs are to be congratulated for all their efforts.

I would like to thank in particular Brad Visser and his team (U19s & U17s), Neil Goodhall and his team(U16s), Kay Parsons for Kit, Brad Visser and his team (Junior Leagues) Deryl Gilham-Jones and his team (U15s), Mike Chanter and his team at U14 level and the new management at U13 level Alex Dunman and his team.

The season’s results were: -

                   W       D       L        GF      GA     PTS    POS

U19s            6        1        0        18      10      19      1st

U16s            7        0        0        39      2        21      1st

U15s            3        1        3        20      14      10      4th

U14s            5        1        0        30      20      16      1st

U13s            3        1        3        16      16      10      4th

One of the many highlights was the U16 having won the South Championship with the former U16s winners from last season representing the South at East as U17s at East Grinstead Hockey Club in the County Championship finals where they came second albeit equal on points lost by one less goal for. As far as the representation for next year remains unknown but it is hoped that something similar will be available for them also next year.  However the U16s had the pleasure of beating an U16 England side as the end of the season.

Several players have gone on to represent the South at U14, 15 and 17 level with a smaller number moving onto International status and being coached at satellites.

U13             Sutton Valence School                 Canterbury HC

U15s: Canterbury and Beckenham and Bromley in the quarter finals to be played on the 19th May

Following my previous thank yous I would also like to give a big thank you to John Mitchell who has been the driving force behind the Schools County National Knockout Competition which culminated in a very successful finals day held at Canterbury HC.

County Winners

U18s – Kent College

U16s – Langley Park

U14s – Kent College

Regional

                                      Winners                           Runners Up

U18s                               Kent College                     Langley Park

U16s                               Langley Park

U14s                                                                      Kent College

National Finals

U16s                                                                      Langley Park (Lost on penalties)

At club level in the leagues that are co-ordinated by Brad Visser It has also been pleasing to see that under Brad’s guidance the number of clubs and therefore sides have steadily increased which can only be good for Kent as player participation and breadth increases.  U16 winners were Bromley and Beckenham with the other 2 age groups yet to play. It is hoped that in next season finals can be played on a set date if it can be financed.

Finally as with every end of year report I again ask for volunteers.  We are again short next year and without keen volunteers whether it be qualified coach, parent or interested party I am sure we can find a niche for you. Without volunteers then Youth Hockey in Kent will suffer accordingly.

Finally may I wish Brad Visser all the best as he takes over from me as Chairman.

Future postings to include:

·       Screening information for U13 and U14 Boys

·       Entry form for Schools County Knockout Cup Competition

Junior League News:

For the season 2007-2008 there are a number of factors that will change the organisation of the junior leagues:

·        The request for monies for entry into the leagues will be requested by KHA when they send out their forms at the beginning of the season.

·        The U18 final of the competition will be played on the same day and venue as the adult final and plate competitions

The U16 and U14 finals will be played on the same day and venue as the girl’s equivalent
